Biplanar Medial Open-Wedge High Tibial Osteotomy for Medial Compartment Osteoarthritis of the Knee: A Novel Technique and Follow-Up
We describe a biplanar open-wedge high tibial osteotomy—a modification of the technique described by Puddu et al and its results. High tibial osteotomy to correct the varus knee became popular after Coventry reported favorable outcomes. Twenty-five patients were treated with this technique for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee from 1999 to 2005. There was significant improvement in Knee Society score and function as well as in hospital for Special Surgery score. There was no significant increase in posterior tibial slope angle. In this article, the authors review the literature and discuss the technique and experience with this method.
